My Cartoon Series: Xylus & Dexter in Space! A Special Episode


As I've said before this cartoon was made between 2004 - 2005 and youTube wasn't around yet so the age of angry comments on peoples posts were not something you just expected as it is today.

I was posting these episodes on a website called Newgrounds which is a site dedicated to flash animation and games. Members were able to vote rate and comment on your flash animations.

Well around the 5th episode I got a message from a kid (I'm assuming it was a kid as 12 to 16 year olds were 90% of the sites members). He didn't just tell me he disliked the cartoon, he started insulting me. And I'm under the impression he thought my boys made the cartoon.

So in response I did a behind the scenes "Special" where the boys read the letter and I showed the words above them to show the many grammatical errors in-between the angry insults. For fun I had dexter react like a spoiled child actor complete with censored audio.
My version of the CBS Special Presentation Intro
I wanted the opening scene to be like the special feature intro CBS used to play before they would show a Charlie Brown holiday cartoon. So again since there was no youTube I hit some of the geek forums of the day and asked if anyone had video of that intro. About a week later some one from an MST3k board posted one.

This cartoon was a fast one since all I had to do was one scene and mostly audio narrative.
I also did a whole scene as an image with a couple of animated elements above them for effect.

New Flyer design

I'm still on my "matchbook cover designs" kick and just created this flyer for an upcoming show my band Lorenzo's Music has on Jan. 17, 2009 in Madison based on a matchbook I saw. It was just an off kilter two-tone repeating square design. I set it up once again in the free vector program, Inkscape . I simply just created a black background and drew a large cream colored square on the left side. Then copied it, paste, move it over, change color, repeat. When I had them all on the left side, I pasted the original square I had on top. I replaced the color with a cloth texture I had and set the opacity to 25% and blurred it .05%. Then I copied all of that, pasted it and moved the new pasted squares to the right side. Next, I added the text in white. Copied the text, pasted it on top of itself and also filled that new layer with the cloth texture an set the opacity to 25% an blurred this to 1% to give it a glow look. And there ya go. The End :)
