A storyboard of mine used in Sound On Sound Magazine

Image
Got an email from  +Grant Baciocco  telling me that a storyboard I made was just used in the August 2014 issue of Sound On Sound Magazine . It's from a cartoon I had animated for Grant's podcast series " The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd ". The article is about the use of storyboards for sound and design. "you start by acquiring a storyboard of key events (even crude drawings will be useful) and any stills or visual inspiration, such as clips of other movies the animators are using as their own reference. You can probably also get hold of early animatics of the movie (animations that are not properly rendered, or completed visually, but are sequenced chronologically as per the storyboard)." Comic Book Character Layout Study

Image
I'm taking panels from old comic books and redrawing them with my characters in place. I'm doing this to study different types of poses and layouts. I inked an colored this using the open source painting program MyPaint with my Wacom Bamboo tablet. I kept the coloring a little messy by using a large brush and let it go outside the lines to give it the effect of an old comic 4 color print.

I don't get mustache humor

Shwoop!

Might have a possible antagonist for the story line. I came up with this while I was trying out some color inking in GIMP. I was thinking he might be more like an annoying gross little guy, as you can see.

Man-girl kindle sketch

Another sketch I did on my kindle fire. Working on my figure drawing. Did this one based on a random photo I saw.

Dog Pooped sketch

Image
Just a sketch I did while I was on the phone. Typical situation, dog pooped and peed and son pretends not to see it and asks to go play. Pentel Sharp Kerry" Mechanical Pencil - Pencils

Old Matchbook design

Image
I created a quick vintage matchbook design for my band Lorenzo's Music using gimp. First I got a scan of an old matchbook. I scanned the screen printed version of our album cover. Truthfully the screen print is what will help the design. I pasted it on a new layer and with the erase tool set to Confetti Brush, wore away the edges. And there it is. I'm thinking of customizing the matchsticks to use as navigation for a website redesign.

A couple character face expression sketches

I'm slowly working on the new comic/cartoon idea that I have. Here are some character face expressions sketches for one of them I'm messing around with.

New Flyer design

Image
I'm still on my "matchbook cover designs" kick and just created this flyer for an upcoming show my band Lorenzo's Music has on Jan. 17, 2009 in Madison based on a matchbook I saw. It was just an off kilter two-tone repeating square design. I set it up once again in the free vector program, Inkscape . I simply just created a black background and drew a large cream colored square on the left side. Then copied it, paste, move it over, change color, repeat. When I had them all on the left side, I pasted the original square I had on top. I replaced the color with a cloth texture I had and set the opacity to 25% and blurred it .05%. Then I copied all of that, pasted it and moved the new pasted squares to the right side. Next, I added the text in white. Copied the text, pasted it on top of itself and also filled that new layer with the cloth texture an set the opacity to 25% an blurred this to 1% to give it a glow look. And there ya go. The End :)

September Flyer Artwork

Image
0809018flyer I was able to make the deadline for the new flyer last night for my bands show on Sept. 18. Truthfully I forgot all about it 'til i was asked late last night. So I fired up Inkscape and just started drawing shapes. I got lucky, it took me about 2 hours and I actually like it. I'm sticking with the weathered screenprint look to match the new album.

CD Release Show Flyer Artwork

lorenzo080830flyer , originally uploaded by tmray02 . This is the flyer artwork I created for my band Lorenzo's Music upcoming CD release show for our new album. http://www.lorenzosmusic.com This is a flyer created based on a vintage french matchbook cover I found on Flickr. I know I could have just used the image and added on top of that, but I wanted to try and recreated the look in Inkscape using textures and the sculpting tool.

Storybook Style Art Project pt. 1

Image
Recently I was asked to create the artwork an advertising music publishing house's website. They wanted the artwork to have the look and feel of a vintage children's storybook. The concept was-- two boys climbing into a pillow fort they made in their living room, which will lead them into an imaginary music land type setting. So for the first part, after several sketches, this was the one that was chosen. After the character sketches were sent, the main boy was chosen from this sketch. I did some clean up work on the pencils and scanned it into GIMP. Then cut it out to look like it was a drawing that was clipped with scissors so later it could be put on top of the art to give it the effect that it's being used to play with like colorforms toys back in the day. In the original concept sketch the other boy was crawling into the fort and they felt it didn't get the idea across that he was doing that. So I decided to draw the other boy like he was sticking his head o...
