Storybook Style Art Project pt. 1

Recently I was asked to create the artwork an advertising music publishing house's website.

They wanted the artwork to have the look and feel of a vintage children's storybook. The concept was-- two boys climbing into a pillow fort they made in their living room, which will lead them into an imaginary music land type setting.

So for the first part, after several sketches, this was the one that was chosen.

After the character sketches were sent, the main boy was chosen from this sketch.

I did some clean up work on the pencils and scanned it into GIMP. Then cut it out to look like it was a drawing that was clipped with scissors so later it could be put on top of the art to give it the effect that it's being used to play with like colorforms toys back in the day.

In the original concept sketch the other boy was crawling into the fort and they felt it didn't get the idea across that he was doing that. So I decided to draw the other boy like he was sticking his head out instead. And I gave him a guitar to hint towards what was going to be inside.

Now I had to create the background.

After several pillow fort sketches, one was chosen and I scanned it into Inkscape and started the ink and paint process.

I imported the cut out images of the boys to Inkscape and colored and shaded them, giving them a faded pencil look. I also added some shading under the paper outlines to make them look more like they had been placed on top of the background. When I had finished the first draft, the pillow fort didn't really standout anymore. So color and patterns were added to the pillows to give them more appeal. As well a cloth texture was added to the blankets laid over the top.

Now I am working on part 2 of this project. The inside music world of the fort.

More to come later.
